Faith Like a Mustard Seed

There are moments in life when we don’t get what we yearn for in-spite of putting in the right amount of work to achieve the kind of results we expect. There could be a host of reasons why sometimes it happens this way, but then again, not getting what we want out of life could be a sign that our faith in attaining what we aim for lacks the quality of steadfastness. Faith in what we believe to be true or possible has to be absolute, unquestionable, unconditional and unshakable. Your faith has to be steadfast despite the numerous failures and obstacles that you are likely to encounter on your quest.

In the English dictionary, faith is defined as total trust or complete confidence in someone or something. Personally, I can’t think of a better definition of faith than that one of award winning poet Rabindranath Tagore who says “Faith is the bird that feels the light and sings when the dawn is still dark.”

Having faith in anything and everything that we set our minds to do is key to attaining our goals and dreams; the act of having faith in ourselves and in the life processes is a super power in itself. In the scriptures it says that for you to move mountains, all you need is to have faith equal to a grain of mustard seed. Faith is good, faith means opening up to possibilities, faith means that it is possible to achieve the object of your desires however the odds or circumstances.
The reason why most people lack faith is because faith means belief and belief falls short of knowledge. Our ego states demand from us that we be in a constant state of knowledge. But this is ridiculous, how can you tell for a fact what will happen in the next minute leave alone tomorrow. You don’t even know for a fact if you will wake up tomorrow, you can only hope or have faith that you will. So you see, without even knowing it, you are practicing faith in the little things. What then makes it difficult to apply the same mentality on those big plans?

Nothing great has ever been achieved in this world without an element of faith. Surprisingly enough if you instill faith within yourself, the unshakable kind of faith, you are guaranteed to witness wonders and amazement unfold in your life. We all know of the United Arab Emirates and how glamorous it is. A few years ago it was only a plain desert. But with the discovery of oil the nation’s founding father set on an ambitious plan of building a mega city that would attract visitors and tourists from across the world. He believed in every fiber of his being that it could be done; he had faith in his vision, his statement… “Build it and they will come.”

It could be that you are struggling with a problem that doesn’t seem to have a solution in sight. It could be that you are working through a challenge that has drained your last bit of energy. Just remember, “Faith is the bird that feels the light and sings when the dawn is still dark.” Have faith that things will turn around for you. Have faith that the night will end and a bright dawn will seep through. Feel the light and sing even when things seem darkest for you. Feel the light and sing even in your sadness, or grief, or loneliness. Feel the light and sing however the odds stand against you.
