The Laughing Buddha

A statue of the Laughing Buddha can be found in many utility stores and malls across the world, it’s unique style and features make it almost impossible to miss. But what is the legend behind this statue.

One source reveals that the real figure behind this popular Buddhist statue was a great Japanese mystic known as Hotei. The source continues to state that Hotei was one of the most loved mystics in Japan even though he never uttered a word.

As he became enlightened, he started laughing, and whenever somebody would ask, “Why are you laughing?” He would laugh some more.

Hotei would move from one village to another with his trademark laugh. A crowd would gather, and Hotei would begin laughing, an infectious laugh; someone in the crowd would catch it and begin laughing as well; and soon everybody would be laughing. And it was strange because no-one knew why they were laughing.

Wherever Hotei went, people would laugh in totality, with intensity , like they never did before. And they found it therapeutic because anytime they laughed their eyes could see better, their whole being became light. It was as if a great burden had been taken off them. And the villagers would tell him as he left, “please come back again.”

For the remainder of his life following his enlightenment. Hotei did only one thing. He laughed. This became his message, his gospel, his scripture. And is one of the main reasons that he is remembered with so much reverence.

Just so you know, Hotei is identified as one of the Shichi-fuku-jin (Seven gods of luck). A group of seven popular Japanese deities all of whom are associated with good fortune and happiness.

  1. I have been browsing on-line more than three hours today, yet I by no means found
any interesting article like yours. It’s beautiful price enough for me.
Personally, if all site owners and bloggers made excellent content as you did, the web will be a lot more useful
    than ever before.
